CHAPTER2 DeviceNet Unit
2-2 How the DeviceNet system works
This brief description of how data is exchanged will help to understand how the control-
ler and sequencer (PLC) operate via the DeviceNet system.
Devices connected to the DeviceNet system are broadly grouped into master stations
and slave stations according to their functions. The master station controls the central-
ized routing of data, much like the master unit of a PLC. The slave station is controlled
by the master station and makes a data response when requested by the master station.
The controllers connected to the DeviceNet unit function as slave stations and exchange
I/O data with the master station.
q The controller on/off information is sent to the master station via the information
network (DeviceNet system cable).
w Master station sequencer (PLC) on/off information is sent to the controller via the
information network (DeviceNet system cable).
*The controller monitors on/off information at 10 millisecond intervals.
MEMO
MEMO
The controllers connected to the DeviceNet unit operate as generic devices.
The MAC ID settings and communication speed settings are made with a DIP switch on
the board. (Checks of these settings are made on the HPB.)
ON/OFF information handled by the DeviceNet unit comes through 16 points each of
general-purpose I/O and 16 points each of custom I/O.
ON/OFF information in the robot program is handled by DO statements, WAIT state-
ments, and JMPB statements. (Serial input/outputs (I/O) for the DeviceNet are assigned
using I/O numbers from 200 onwards.) Designated I/O ports can be controlled inde-
pendently of the program by making emulated serialization settings on the parallel I/O.
Master Station
This station controls the centralised routing of data.
This is equivalent to a master sequencer (PLC) unit.
Slave Station
These stations are controlled
in the DeviceNet system by
the master station.
